The Chairmanship of the Al-Quds Committee

The chairmanship of the Al-Quds Committee was transferred to His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God protect him, after he ascended to the throne of the Kingdom of Morocco, following the passing of his late father, King Hassan II, may God grant him mercy who was entrusted with the chairing  the Committee by his fellow kings, princes, and heads of Arab and Islamic states.

This recognition highlighted His Majesty’s personal stature, international standing, and commendable efforts in supporting the Palestinian cause and the issue of the holy city of Al-Quds on all fronts.

His Majesty King Mohammed VI may God protect him fulfills his duties at the helm of the Al-Quds Committee with wisdom, sagacity, and competence. His Majesty has always emphasised in his speeches that “the chairmanship of the Al-Quds Committee is not a favor, nor is it a privilege but, rather, a crucial sacred trust and a tremendous responsibility”.

His Majesty King Mohammed VI was born on August 21, 1963, in Rabat. He is the twenty-third king of the noble Alaouite dynasty, which has ruled the Kingdom of Morocco since the mid-17th century.

The Alaouite family descends from the noble lineage of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him). They settled in the city of Sijilmassa, in the Tafilalt region in southern Morocco.

Upbringing, Education, and Academic Formation.

At the age of four, his father, King Hassan II, enrolled him in the Quranic school annexed to the Royal Palace.

  • He completed his primary and secondary education at the Royal Palace College where he obtained his Baccalaureate in June 1981.
  • He pursued his postgraduate studies in law at the Faculty of Legal, Economic, and Social Sciences at Mohammed V University in Rabat. And in 1985, he earned a bachelor’s degree in the subject of “The Arab-African Union and the Kingdom’s Strategy in the Field of International Relations”.

 

  • In 1987, he got his first degree of high studies in Political Sciences and a second degree, in Public Law, on July 1988 with honor

On October 29, 1993, he obtained a PhD in Law with highest honors from the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis in France. His thesis was titled “Cooperation between the European Common Market and the Arab Maghreb Union.”

  • On June 22, 2000, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by George Washington University
  • His Majesty is author of a book and many articles on the Euro-Maghreb cooperation.
  • To further his education and gain practical experience in applying the principles and rules of law learned in college, His Majesty did a training program for several months in 1988 in Brussels at the office of Mr. Jacques Delors, the President of the European Commission at that time.
  • His Majesty King Mohammed VI took on increasing responsibilities at a young age. His late father King Hassan II (May God grant him His Mercy) entrusted him with numerous missions at both national, Arab, Islamic, African, and international levels where he represented him with the heads of brotherly  and friendly countries at a number of political meetings and ceremonial functions.
  • His Majesty is fluent in Arabic, French, Spanish, and English.
  • His Majesty practices a variety of sports activities.

Ascension to the Throne

His Majesty King Mohammed VI ascended to the throne as Commander of the Faithful in the Royal Palace in Rabat on July 23, 1999, following the passing of his late father, His Majesty King Hassan II, May God  grant him His mercy.

On July 30, 1999, His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Commander of the Faithful, officially led the Friday prayer and delivered his first speech from the Throne. This date was officially adopted to celebrate the Throne Day.

His Majesty also assumed the role of Supreme Commander and Chief of General Staff of the Royal Armed Forces (FAR)

The Chairmanship of the Al-Quds Committee

His Majesty chairs the Al-Quds Committee which was established upon the recommendation of the Sixth Conference of Foreign Ministers of Member Countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), held in Jeddah in 1975.

The Committee was tasked with developing programs and plans aimed at protecting the Holy City and preserving its religious and cultural sanctities. The late King Hassan II, may Allah have  mercy on him, served as Chairman of the Committee  at that time.
