Rabat, May 10, 2024
The Bayt Mal Al-Quds Al-Sharif Agency, under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, announced a new package of restoration and reconstruction projects in the Old City of Jerusalem and surrounding neighborhoods. This announcement was made during a meeting held Friday in Rabat, where the agency outlined its 2024 work plan.
During the meeting, a cooperation and partnership agreement was signed between the agency and the Moroccan Association to Support Reconstruction in Palestine to fund part of the announced projects. The agreement was signed by Muhammad Salem Al-Sharqawi, the agency’s Acting Director, and Jamal Al-Bouzidi, president of the association.
The signing ceremony was attended by the Ambassador of the State of Palestine to Morocco, Jamal Al-Shoubaki, along with representatives from the agency’s partners in Morocco and Jerusalem. These partners included the Moroccan Association to Support Reconstruction in Palestine, the Heritage Restoration and Employment Center in Ouarzazate, the Regional Authority of Architects in the Fez-Meknes Guercif region, the Kenitra Architects Association, the Palestinian Architects Association, the Moroccan Association for Supporting the Palestinian Struggle, the Cooperation Foundation in Jerusalem, and the RIWAQ Center for Architecture Conservation.
In a speech, Al-Sharqawi emphasized that despite the challenges in Jerusalem, the agency remains committed to implementing its 2024 work plan, guided by the vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI. The agency focuses on impactful projects that benefit Palestinians and their institutions in Jerusalem.
Al-Sharqawi highlighted that the program prioritizes the restoration of archaeological buildings in Jerusalem, assessing and addressing the damage sustained through targeted restorations while preserving their architectural and engineering uniqueness.
The projects include 100 restorations across 10 properties in the Old City, covering roofs, green spaces, humidity control, doors, and retaining walls. Five properties and houses in Jerusalem neighborhoods will be rehabilitated, along with the entrances and courtyards of Al-Quds University in Beit Hanina. A social facility will also be constructed near the Al-Maqasid Charitable Society Hospital in Jerusalem.
